As I get more and more into taking care of my skin, the more I become curious about and want to try treatments and tools that can help my skin look it’s best. Most recently I have been studying and researching the benefits of microneedling. A reader asked me to do a video on it a while back and after some quick research I was hesitant to try it myself because it seemed rather intense. So I continued to research, and consulted with some estheticians and here is what you need to know.
WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?
Microneedling is a dermarolling procedure that uses small needles to prick the skin. This puncturing of the skin causes a wound healing response and causes many benefits to the skin. With zero chemicals or down time, this is a great procedure you can do at home.
You can purchase a microneedling tool for as little as $10. You want to look for titanium needles as they’re strong, sharp and rust resistant. Lengths of needles vary, however to safely do this at home you want to use .2mm-.5mm unless the procedure is being performed by a professional as you will experience minimal bleeding and need a numbing cream applied.
BENEFITS OF MICRONEEDLING
Microneedling has many benefits that include:
- stimulates production of collagen and elastin
- improves texture of skin
- improves hyperpigmentation
- can improve stretch marks
- can improve scarring* to include acne scarring*
- can reduce the appearance of pores
- improve appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
*If you have keloid scarring, you are not to microneedle these areas. While it does help with acne scarring, this method is not to be used on active acne.
I’ve done a video on how you can perform microneedling at home here.
