Surviving a Juice Cleanse

2020 is a year that I decided no excuses and I was going to cut things cold turkey and really meet my physical goals that I had set out for myself. Get snatched or die trying by any means!  While out on a Target run with my good girlfriend Ashlee (of Will Drink For Travel) I picked up a scale. I know I KNOW, why would I do such a thing right? But I got on the scale that night and immediately drank a detox tea and threw out all the sweets. It was time to get serious.

I know many of my friends who have done juice cleanses, but I was very hesitant for a number of reasons. One thing that held me back is that I’m allergic to a lot of raw fruits and veggies. My assumption was that juice being a raw form would irritate me and cause a reaction. I was also honestly worried about taste. I literally can’t stomach things I find nasty, and honestly, a lot of tastes repulse me. I was lucky enough to win a 3 day juice cleanse from The Vitality Juice on Instagram a few weeks ago and decided I would just go for it since I was already eating healthy and getting back in the gym.

I was pleased with the results of the 3 day juice cleanse, but more than anything I was proud of myself for locking in and being disciplined.  I had tons of energy and to be very honest, I was never really hungry.

The Juices

There were 6 juices (12 ounces each bottle) a day that I had to drink every 2-3 hours in a specific order. I would drink my first juice around 730am and be finished no later than 9pm each day. There was absolutely no eating. Not even a piece of gum or a mint. For the most part they were easy to drink as far as taste, except for Juice 5. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little thinking about it as I’m typing this.

Juice 1: Clean as a Whistle (Metabolism Aid)

(Lemon, Apple, Pineapple, Cayenne, Honey)

Juice 2: Oh Kale Nah (Detoxing)

(Kale, Apple, Lemon, Cucumber, Ginger)

Juice 3: 24 Carrot (Immune System Boost)

(Carrot, Lemon, Orange, Ginger, Apple)

Juice 4: Beets ME! (Energy Boost)

(Beets, Carrot, Apple, Lemon, Orange)

Juice 5: Just Dandy (Water Retention Aid)

(Dandelion Root, Celery, Ginger, Pears, Romaine)

Juice 6. Gotta Go! (Digestion Aid)

(Apple, Kiwi, Papaya, Pears, Prunes)

Prepping for a juice cleanse:

To prepare yourself for a juice cleanse you in some ways want to pre-cleanse. By that I mean start ridding yourself bad eating habits. Cut out all processed foods and refined sugars as it will make it easier for your body to transition. I personally had already been eating clean and intermittent fasting for 10 days prior so it was super easy for me.

Enduring a juice cleanse:

It’s not uncommon when detoxing and cleansing to experience hunger pains, headaches and a down right nasty attitude and irritability. Thank God I didn’t experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, but here are some ways to help you get through a cleanse successfully.

  •  Drink tons of water
  •  Set alarms on your phone for when to drink them
  •  Be busy. The busier  you are, the less you think about being hungry
  •  Remember why you’re doing it

Coming off a juice cleanse:

When breaking your fast from a juice cleanse there are some things you want to note. Start off with light soups or broth like items. Stay away from heavy foods and greasy foods. Those would be sure to have your stomach upset. Don’t go back to terrible eating, because then you’ve defeated the purpose.

I encourage anyone to try a juice cleanse if they’ve never done it. It’s a great experience and discipline test if you need one. If you’ve done a juice cleanse and there is something that I’m missing, please feel free to share your tips and tricks in the comments below!
